Get Ready for Involvement!
An innovative, interactive training course to help people prepare themselves for involvement – one for researchers and one for people with lived experience.
People with lived experience learn how to become an effective critical friend. Researchers learn how to better respond to critical feedback.
This training builds the confidence of people who are new to involvement. It can also help those with experience to improve their practice.
It’s different from – and complements – much of the training already available.
Watch a video about the training (< 2 min)
The training for people with lived experience explains:
- how their knowledge and wisdom makes them experts
- how their expertise helps researchers
- how to use their lived experience to persuade and influence
- how to be an effective critical friend
The training for researchers explains:
- what involvement is and isn’t – it’s not a focus group
- how to work with peoples’ experiential knowledge – how this is different to data
- how to respond in the moment to critical feedback
- why PPI leads can’t do this work for researchers

The training for people with lived experience was co-produced with people with lived experience and PPI leads at Exeter University.
The training for researchers has evolved from 25 years’ experience of evaluating impact, witnessing common misunderstandings and finding successful ways to debunk the myths around involvement. It has been run for several years in the UK and Denmark.
“The parents who attended the training sang Kristina’s praises and their involvement in my research was the best I’ve ever encountered – they really were equal members of the team at every stage.”
Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer, University of Birmingham
“I’ve been working in the field for 10 years and it’s the best explanation of involvement I’ve ever heard!”
Melissa Bovis, Academy of Medical Sciences
“It’s one of the most valuable trainings I’ve attended because it raises awareness of roles and expectations on both sides. It helps avoid misunderstandings and build more effective and respectful partnerships”
